CR = (Vs + Vc) ÷ Vc
What displacement is
Displacement is the volume a piston sweeps as it travels from top dead centre (TDC) to bottom dead centre (BDC), multiplied by the number of cylinders. It is the figure an engine is known by, such as 110cc, 125cc or 1000cc, and the one race classes are divided by.
For one cylinder:
Displacement per cylinder (cc) = π/4 × bore² × stroke ÷ 1,000
with bore and stroke in millimetres. A Honda Wave125i, for example, has a 52.4 mm bore and 57.9 mm stroke, which works out to about 124.85 cc, rounded to 125cc in the model name.
What compression ratio is
Compression ratio (CR) is how many times the charge is squeezed as the piston rises from the bottom of its stroke to the top. It comes from the swept volume (Vs) and the volume left above the piston at TDC (Vc), which is mostly the combustion chamber in the head.
CR = (Vs + Vc) ÷ Vc
A higher ratio gets more work out of the fuel, improving torque and economy, but too high for the fuel in the tank causes knock, which overheats and damages an engine. This tool gives the geometric (static) ratio; the working (dynamic) ratio is lower because the intake valve is still open as the piston starts to rise.
How to measure chamber volume
- Fit the head with its gasket and turn the engine until the piston is at TDC.
- With a burette or a graduated syringe, fill through the spark plug hole with light oil or alcohol up to the thread.
- Read the volume used. It already includes the chamber, piston crown, gasket and deck, so it is the most complete Vc.
Measuring the bare head alone leaves out the gasket and deck, so the calculated ratio comes out higher than the real one.
Compression ratio and fuel
General guidance for naturally aspirated four-strokes; the maker's manual always comes first:
- Up to 10:1 gasohol 91 comfortably, including older air-cooled engines
- 10–12:1 91 in modern fuel-injected engines; 95 if modified or air-cooled
- 12–13:1 gasohol 95 or E20
- 13–14:1 95 only where the maker designed for it; modified engines want RON 97–98 and a retuned ignition
- Above 14:1 race fuel or E85 with a tune; not for road engines
Raising compression, carefully
The usual ways are skimming the head, a thinner gasket, or domed pistons; each reduces Vc. On a small engine a single cc of Vc moves the ratio a lot, so use "Reach a target ratio" to see the chamber volume you need. Whenever compression goes up, check valve-to-piston clearance and squish, and listen for knock once it is running.
How much does a bore add
Displacement grows with the square of the bore, so one millimetre adds more than it sounds. It also raises Vs, so compression rises even with the same chamber. Enter the new bore to see both change, and check your race class's capacity limit before boring.
What mean piston speed tells you
Mean piston speed = 2 × stroke × rpm ÷ 60. The higher it is, the more inertia load and wear on pistons, rings and rods. Everyday engines usually stay under 15 m/s; superbikes reach about 20–25 m/s at the redline.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't the calculated cc match the model name?
Makers round the figure for the name, so the value from the real bore and stroke differs slightly.
Why is my calculated ratio higher than the spec?
Usually because the chamber was measured on the bare head, which leaves out the gasket and deck volume.
Does it work for two-strokes?
For displacement, yes. Two-strokes measure compression from exhaust port closing (trapped), so the fuel table above does not apply.
