What sprocket gearing is
A chain-driven motorcycle sends power to the rear wheel in three stages: the primary gears from the crank to the clutch, the gearbox, and the front and rear sprockets. The final drive ratio is the rear sprocket's tooth count divided by the front's.
Final drive = rear teeth ÷ front teeth
Overall ratio = primary × gear ratio × final drive
A 15-tooth front and 45-tooth rear give a final drive of 3.0: the front sprocket turns three times for each turn of the wheel.
Shorter versus taller gearing
- Shorter (a bigger ratio): a smaller front or bigger rear sprocket. Quicker launches and acceleration, higher rpm at every speed, lower top speed at the redline.
- Taller (a smaller ratio): a bigger front or smaller rear sprocket. Lower rpm when cruising and a higher top speed at the redline, but slower acceleration.
A 1% change in ratio changes the speed at a given rpm by about 1%.
Front or rear: how different is one tooth
The front sprocket has fewer teeth, so one tooth there matters more. From 15/45, dropping to a 14-tooth front gives 3.214 (about 7% shorter), while a 46-tooth rear gives 3.067 (about 2% shorter). One tooth off the front is roughly three teeth on the rear, which is why mechanics use the front for coarse changes and the rear for fine ones.
Working out speed from rpm
Speed (km/h) = rpm ÷ overall ratio × tyre circumference (mm) × 60 ÷ 1,000,000
The circumference comes from the sidewall size. 190/55-17 is 190 mm wide with a 55% sidewall on a 17-inch rim: 17 × 25.4 + 2 × 190 × 0.55 ≈ 640.8 mm across, about 2,013 mm round. The calculator currently uses a 190/55-17 tyre for speeds; ratios and percentage changes do not depend on the tyre.
Reading the engine speed chart
Each line is one gear from idle to the redline; solid lines are the new sprockets and dashed lines the current ones. After an upshift the rpm should still land where the engine pulls well. Zoom in to see the hand-over between gears more clearly.
Before you change sprockets
- A bigger rear sprocket needs a longer chain or the axle moved forward; check the swingarm adjusters before buying.
- Too small a front sprocket bends the chain tightly, so it wears and vibrates; stay within one or two teeth of stock.
- Sprockets and chain wear together, so replace them as a set.
- Bikes that measure speed from the gearbox will show the wrong speed after a change; bikes that measure at the front wheel will not.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't my bike reach the calculated top speed?
The figure is top gear at the redline; air drag and available power may stop the bike short of it.
Shorter or taller for the track?
If you hit the limiter in top gear before the end of the straight, go taller. If you never reach peak-power rpm, go shorter.
Does it work for scooters?
Scooters with a CVT belt have no step ratios and no sprockets, so this tool is for chain-driven bikes with a gearbox.
